Acetasol HC is a medicine used to treat ear infections. Acetasol HC contains two medicines that work in different ways to treat your ear infection: acetic acid and hydrocortisone.
How does this medication work?
Acetic acid works by stopping the growth of bacteria and fungus. Hydrocortisone works by reducing inflammation. Together, they work to treat your ear infection.
What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?
What: Acetasol HC may eliminate the cause of your ear infection, thereby relieving your symptoms.
When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions. It is important that you use Acetasol HC exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed for the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve earlier.
How do I know it is working?
You may start to notice an improvement in your symptoms once you begin using Acetasol HC. This is a good indicator that your medication is working. Your healthcare provider may also ask you questions to assess how well your infection is being treated.
The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.
More common side effects may include: temporary stinging or burning.
Less common side effects may include:
Allergic reaction, with symptoms such as irritation.
Do not use Acetasol HC if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Do not use Acetasol HC if you have a ruptured eardrum.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Acetasol HC. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history.
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.
In order to keep as much of the drops in the ear(s) as possible, insert a wick of cotton saturated with Acetasol HC into your or your child's ear canal. You may also add the drops to the cotton after you insert it in the ear. Keep the wick of cotton in your or your child's ear for at least 24 hours.
Adults and children ≥3 years: Apply 3 to 5 drops to the cotton every 4 to 6 hours for the first 24 hours of treatment.
Remove the wick of cotton after 24 hours, as directed by your healthcare provider, and continue to apply the drops as follows:
Adults: Apply 5 drops into the affected ear(s) 3 or 4 times a day.
Children ≥3 years: Apply 3 to 4 drops to the affected ear(s) 3 or 4 times a day.
Apply Acetasol HC exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop using Acetasol HC without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Carefully remove all ear wax to allow Acetasol HC to reach the infected surfaces directly.
Do not use Acetasol HC on any other area of your body. It is only meant to be used in your ear(s).
No significant interactions have been reported with Acetasol HC at this time. However, always tell your healthcare provider about any medicines you take, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
The effects of Acetasol HC during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
If you miss a dose of Acetasol HC, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply two doses at once.
Store at room temperature.
In the event of a medical emergency call your doctor or 9-1-1 immediately. In the event of overdose, call your doctor or poison control for further instructions.
