Megace is a medicine used to treat loss of appetite, cachexia (malnutrition), or unexplained weight loss in people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
How does this medication work?
It is unknown exactly how Megace works to increase appetite.
Megace is not used to prevent weight loss.
What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?
What: Studies have shown that Megace improved appetite and increased caloric intake.
When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions. It is important that you take Megace exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed.
How do I know it is working?
You may notice an improvement in your appetite after you start taking Megace. Your healthcare provider may also ask you questions from time to time to assess how well this medication is working.
The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.
More common side effects may include: diarrhea, rash, gas, nausea, high blood pressure, weakness, trouble sleeping, fever, headache, indigestion.
Less common side effects may include:
Harm to your unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you believe or suspect you are pregnant while you are taking Megace.
Adrenal insufficiency (a disorder where the body does not make enough of certain hormones), with symptoms such low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or weakness.
Megace may also cause or worsen existing diabetes.
Do not take Megace if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Do not take Megace if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Megace. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have diabetes, Cushing's syndrome (a hormone disorder), adrenal gland problems, bleeding problems, or if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.
Adults: The recommended starting dose is 800 milligrams (20 milliliters) once a day.
Take Megace exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Shake the bottle well before taking your dose of Megace.
Do not become pregnant or breastfeed while you are taking Megace.
No significant interactions have been reported with Megace at this time. However, always tell your healthcare provider about any medicines you take, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Megace can harm your unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. Do not become pregnant or breastfeed while you are taking Megace. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
If you miss a dose of Megace, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Store at room temperature. Protect from heat.
In the event of a medical emergency call your doctor or 9-1-1 immediately. In the event of overdose, call your doctor or poison control for further instructions.
