Qutenza is a medicine used to treat pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain caused by a certain infection). Qutenza is available as a patch.
How does this medication work?
Qutenza works by affecting the way your body responds to pain.
What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?
What: In studies, Qutenza has been shown to relieve pain for up to 3 months.
When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions.
How do I know it is working?
You may feel an improvement in your symptoms once you begin treatment with Qutenza. This is a good indicator that your medication is working. Your healthcare provider may ask you questions to assess how well your symptoms are controlled.
The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.
More common side effects may include: redness, pain, itchiness, or rash at the application site.
Less common side effects may include:
Qutenza may increase your blood pressure.
Your healthcare provider will not administer Qutenza to you if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Qutenza. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have high blood pressure or if you recently had a heart attack or stroke.
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.
Adults: Your healthcare provider will prescribe the appropriate dose for you.
Your healthcare provider will apply Qutenza for you.
The treated area may be sensitive for a few days to heat (including hot showers or baths, direct sunlight, or vigorous exercise).
Inhaling the ingredients of Qutenza patch may cause coughing or sneezing. Tell your healthcare provider if you experience shortness of breath or irritation in your eyes.
Do not touch Qutenza patch or the treatment area. If you accidently touch the patch, you may experience burning and/or stinging.
No significant interactions have been reported with Qutenza at this time. However, always tell your healthcare provider about any medicines you take, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
The effects of Qutenza during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Qutenza should be given under special circumstances determined by your healthcare provider. If you miss your scheduled dose, contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist for advice.
Your healthcare provider will store this medication for you.
