    • What is this medication and its most common uses?

      Requip XL is a medicine used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Requip XL is an extended-release medicine (a type of tablet that releases medicine into your body throughout the day).

    • What should I know when beginning and continuing on this medication?

      How does this medication work?

      Dopamine is a natural chemical in the brain that helps control movement. Requip XL is thought to increase the activity of dopamine, thereby improving motor control.

      What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?

      What: Studies show that people who receive Requip XL have significantly greater improvement in motor function (such as decreased muscle rigidity) than people who do not receive Requip XL.

      When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions. It is important that you take Requip XL exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed.

      How do I know it is working?

      Your healthcare provider may ask you a series of questions from time to time, which will help assess how well your symptoms are controlled with treatment.

    • What are the possible side effects of this medication?

      The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.

      Advanced Parkinson's Disease

      More common side effects may include: uncontrollable muscle movements, nausea, dizziness, hallucinations.

      Early Parkinson's Disease

      More common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, abdominal pain or discomfort, dizziness, headache, constipation.

      Less common side effects of Requip XL may include:

      Sudden fall in blood pressure when first standing up from sitting or lying down, especially when you start taking Requip XL or when your healthcare provider increases your dose, with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, faintness, or sweating.

      Urges to behave in a way unusual for you, such as unusual urges to gamble or increased sexual urges and behaviors.

      If you are also taking L-dopa for Parkinson's disease, Requip XL may make some side effects of L-dopa worse, such as causing uncontrolled sudden movements or make such movement you already have worse.

      Requip XL may increase or decrease your heart rate.

      People with Parkinson's disease have a higher risk of melanoma (type of skin cancer). It is no clear if this risk is associated with the disease or the medicines used to treat it. Your healthcare provider may check your skin on a regular basis.

    • Who should not take this medication?

      Do not take Requip XL if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.

    • What should I tell my healthcare provider before I take the first dose of this medication?

      Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Requip XL. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have liver or heart problems, changes in your blood pressure, daytime sleepiness from a sleep disorder other than restless legs syndrome, if you start or stop smoking, drink alcoholic beverages, or if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

    • What is the usual dosage?

      The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.

      Adults: The recommended starting dose is 2 milligrams once a day. Your healthcare provider may increase or adjust your dose as needed, until the desired effect is achieved.

      It is important that you do not stop taking this medication abruptly. If you need to change or stop taking this medication, it is important that you only do this with the guidance of your healthcare provider.

    • How should I take this medication?

      Take Requip XL exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking Requip XL without first talking to your healthcare provider.

      Swallow Requip XL tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or split the tablets.

      Take Requip XL at or around the same time each day, with or without food. If you feel nausea, taking the tablets with food can help.

      Requip XL is released over a 24-hour period. If you have a condition where medicine passes through your body too quickly, such as diarrhea, Requip XL may not dissolve completely and you may see tablet residue in your stool. If this happens, tell healthcare provider as soon as possible.

    • What should I avoid while taking this medication?

      Do not drive a car, operate machinery, or engage in other dangerous activities if you fall asleep or feel very sleepy after taking Requip XL.

    • What are the possible food and drug interactions associated with this medication?

      If Requip XL is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Requip XL may interact with numerous medications. Therefore, it is very important that you tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking.

    • May I receive this medication if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

      The effects of Requip XL during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

    • What should I do if I miss a dose of this medication?

      If you miss a dose of Requip XL, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

    • How should I store this medication?

      Store at room temperature.
