Xeloda is an anticancer medicine used to treat colon cancer after surgery and colorectal (colon or rectum) cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Xeloda is also used alone or in combination with docetaxel, to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and cannot be treated with other medicines.
How does this medication work?
Xeloda works by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, thereby reducing the tumor size.
What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?
What: Xeloda may decrease tumor size and improve symptoms.
When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions. It is important that you take Xeloda exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed.
How do I know it is working?
Your healthcare provider may order tests regularly to check how well this medication is working.
The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.
Xeloda can cause serious and life-threatening bleeding if taken together with certain blood thinner medications (such as warfarin). Your risk may be increased if you are >60 years old or have cancer. Your healthcare provider will monitor you during your treatment with Xeloda.
More common side effects may include: diarrhea; nausea; vomiting; stomach area pain; hand-and-foot syndrome (condition with symptoms such as the palms of your hands or soles of your feet tingle, feel numb, or are painful, swollen, or red); tiredness, weakness.
Less common side effects may include:
Heart problems with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, feeling faint, irregular heartbeats or skipping beats, sudden weight gain, or swollen ankles or legs.
Condition known as dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency with symptoms such as ulcers and inflammation of the linings of the stomach and intestines, diarrhea, and nerve damage.
Low blood cell counts with symptoms such as easy bruising or bleeding, infection, fever, paleness, or unusual tiredness.
Loss of too much body fluid (dehydration) and serious kidney problems with symptoms such as loss of appetite, weakness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Serious skin and mouth reactions with symptoms such as skin rash, blisters, peeling of your skin, or painful redness of your mouth and tongue.
Xeloda may harm your unborn baby if you take it during pregnancy. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you believe or suspect you are pregnant while you are taking Xeloda.
Do not take Xeloda to you if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Do not take Xeloda if you have serious kidney impairment.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Xeloda. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have heart, kidney, or liver problems; if you lack the enzyme DPD; or if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.
Adults: Your healthcare provider will prescribe the appropriate dose for you, based on your height and body weight.
If you have kidney impairment, your healthcare provider may adjust your dose appropriately.
Take Xeloda exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking Xeloda without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Take Xeloda within 30 minutes after a meal.
Swallow Xeloda tablets whole with water. Do not cut or crush Xeloda tablets.
Do not become pregnant or breastfeed while you are taking Xeloda. Men taking Xeloda should use effective birth control methods.
If Xeloda is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your healthcare provider before combining Xeloda with the following: blood thinners (such as warfarin), folic acid, phenytoin, or leucovorin.
Xeloda can cause harm to your unborn baby if you take it during pregnancy. Do not become pregnant or breastfeed while you are taking Xeloda. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
If you miss a dose of Xeloda, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Store at room temperature.
In the event of a medical emergency call your doctor or 9-1-1 immediately. In the event of overdose, call your doctor or poison control for further instructions.
