Zantac is a medicine used to treat and maintain healing of duodenal and gastric ulcers and erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the small intestine). Zantac is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (a condition in which the stomach contents leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus [the tube that connects your mouth and stomach]) and certain conditions where your stomach makes too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How does this medication work?
Zantac works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach, thereby improving your symptoms.

Ulcers: Zantac may help heal and reduce the frequency and severity of pain associated with duodenal or gastric ulcers.
Erosive Esophagitis: Zantac has been shown to relieve heartburn associated with this condition.
GERD: By reducing stomach acid, Zantac may help heal acid-related damage to the lining of your esophagus and relieve symptoms such as heartburn.
Conditions Causing Increased Stomach Acid Production: Zantac may reduce the acid produced in the stomach, thereby relieving symptoms associated with this condition. When: Symptoms associated with GERD and erosive esophagitis may be relieved within 24 hours after starting treatment with Zantac.
