Gabitril is a medicine used in combination with other medications to treat certain types of seizures.
How does this medication work?
Gabitril is thought to help keep electrical signals balanced in the brain.
What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?
What: Gabitril has been shown to reduce the frequency of seizures when used in combination with other seizure medications.
When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions. It is important that you take Gabitril exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed.
How do I know it is working?
Your healthcare provider may ask you questions from time to time that will help assess how well your symptoms are controlled with treatment. You may also notice a decrease in the number of seizures you normally experience.
The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.
More common side effects may include: dizziness, lack of energy, drowsiness, nausea, nervousness, shaking, stomach pain, abnormal thinking, difficulty with concentration or attention.
Less common side effects may include:
Increased suicidal thoughts or actions, with symptoms such as having thoughts about suicide or dying; attempts to commit suicide; new or worse depression, anxiety, or irritability; feeling agitated or restless; panic attacks; trouble sleeping; acting aggressive or being angry or violent; acting on dangerous impulses; an extreme increase in activity and talking; or other unusual changes in your behavior or mood.
Mental health problems, with symptoms such as impaired thinking or concentration; speech or language problems; confusion; and drowsiness.
Gabitril may also cause seizures in people who do not have epilepsy, or cause weakness all over your body, eye or vision problems, or a serious rash.
Do not take Gabitril if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Gabitril. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have or have had depression, mood problems, or suicidal thoughts or behavior; liver problems; a history of status epilepticus (a prolonged seizure that may be life-threatening); or are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.
Adults and children ≥12 years: The usual starting dose is 4 milligrams once daily. Your healthcare provider may adjust your or your child's dose as needed, until the desired effect is achieved.
If you have liver impairment, your healthcare provider may adjust your dose appropriately.
It is important that you do not stop taking this medication abruptly. If you need to change or stop taking this medication, it is important that you only do this with the guidance of your healthcare provider.
Take Gabitril exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking Gabitril without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Take Gabitril with food.
Do not drink alcohol or take other medicines that make you sleepy or dizzy while taking Gabitril without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Do not drive a car, operate heavy machinery, or engage in other dangerous activities until you know how Gabitril affects you.
If Gabitril is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Gabitril may interact with numerous medications. Therefore, it is very important that you tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking.
The effects of taking Gabitril during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
If you become pregnant while taking Gabitril, talk to your healthcare provider about registering with the North American Antiepileptic Drug (NAAED) Pregnancy Registry. The purpose of this registry is to collect information about the safety of seizure medicines during pregnancy.
If you miss a dose of Gabitril at your scheduled time, do not take two doses of Gabitril at the same time. Contact your healthcare provider if you miss more than one dose.
Store at room temperature. Protect from light and moisture.
In the event of a medical emergency call your doctor or 9-1-1 immediately. In the event of overdose, call your doctor or poison control for further instructions.
