    • What is this medication and its most common uses?

      Helixate FS is a medicine used to control and prevent bleeding episodes in people with hemophilia A (a type of bleeding disorder that prevents blood from clotting normally). It is also used during surgery in people with hemophilia A. Helixate FS is also used to routinely prevent bleeding episodes, and to prevent the risk of joint damage in children. Helixate FS is administered as intravenous (into your vein) injections.

      How does this medication work?

      Helixate FS works by replacing a clotting factor called factor VIII, helping your blood to form clots and decreasing bleeding episodes.

      What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?

      What: In studies, Helixate FS has been shown to treat bleeding in approximately 92% of people previously treated with other medicines.

      When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions. It is important that you use Helixate FS exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed.

      How do I know it is working?

      Your healthcare provider may perform certain tests to check how well this medication is working.

    • What are the possible side effects of this medication?

      The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.

      More common side effects may include: rash, itching, hives, infusion-site reactions, infections.

      Less common side effects may include:

      Allergic reactions, with symptoms such as facial swelling, flushing, hives, decrease in blood pressure, nausea, rash, restlessness, shortness of breath, increased heart rate, chest tightness, tingling, or vomiting.

    • Who should not take this medication?

      Do not use Helixate FS if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.

      Do not use Helixate FS if you are allergic to rodents (such as mice or hamsters).

    • What should I tell my healthcare provider before I take the first dose of this medication?

      Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Helixate FS. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have heart problems, or if you have been told that you have inhibitors to factor VIII (because Helixate FS may not work for you).

    • What is the usual dosage?

      The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.

      Adults and children: Your healthcare provider will prescribe the appropriate dose for you, based on the weight, the type of bleeding episode or surgery, or if the medicine is being used for routine prevention.

    • How should I take this medication?

      Use Helixate FS exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not use it more often or stop using it without first talking to your healthcare provider.

      After reconstituting, administer Helixate FS within 3 hours.

      Please review the instructions from your healthcare provider regarding how to properly administer Helixate FS. It is recommended to use the administration set provided.

    • What should I avoid while taking this medication?

      Do not attempt to self-infuse Helixate FS unless you have been taught how by your healthcare provider or hemophilia center.

    • What are the possible food and drug interactions associated with this medication?

      No significant interactions have been reported with Helixate FS at this time. However, always tell your healthcare provider about any medicines you take, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

    • May I receive this medication if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

      The effects of Helixate FS during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

    • What should I do if I miss a dose of this medication?

      Helixate FS should be used under special circumstances determined by your healthcare provider. If you miss your scheduled dose, contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist for advice.

    • How should I store this medication?

      Store in the refrigerator for up to 30 months or at room temperature for up to 12 months. If stored at room temperature, do not return to the refrigerator.

      Do not freeze. Protect from extreme exposure to light.
