Hetlioz is a medicine used to treat a sleep disorder called Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder.
How does this medication work?
Hetlioz works similarly to a natural substance in the brain called melatonin, that is needed for sleep.
What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?
What: Hetlioz has been shown to be effective in improving nighttime total sleep duration and reducing daytime naps.
When: It may take weeks or months before Hetlioz starts working. It is important that you take Hetlioz exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed in order for you to get a beneficial effect from the medicine.
How do I know it is working?
If you are sleeping longer throughout the night and taking less daytime naps, Hetlioz is likely working effectively. Your healthcare provider may ask you questions from time to time to assess your sleep pattern.
The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.
More common side effects may include: headache, nightmares or unusual dreams, respiratory or urinary tract infection.
Less common side effects may include:
Drowsiness that may affect your ability to perform certain activities.
Do not take Hetlioz if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Hetlioz. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have liver disease or you smoke.
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.
Adults: The recommended dose is 20 milligrams before bedtime.
Take Hetlioz exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking Hetlioz without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Take Hetlioz without food. Swallow the capsule whole.
Take Hetlioz before bedtime, at the same time every night. If you cannot take Hetlioz at around the same time on a given night, skip the dose that night.
Limit your activities to those necessary to prepare for bed after taking Hetlioz.
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Hetlioz.
Do not engage in activities that require complete alertness until you know how Hetlioz affects you.
If Hetlioz is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Hetlioz may interact with numerous medications. Therefore, it is very important that you tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking.
The effects of Hetlioz during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Hetlioz should be taken under special circumstances determined by your healthcare provider. If you miss your scheduled dose, contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist for advice.
Store at room temperature. Protect from light and moisture.
In the event of a medical emergency call your doctor or 9-1-1 immediately. In the event of overdose, call your doctor or poison control for further instructions.
