    • What is this medication and its most common uses?

      K-Phos Original is a medicine used in people with high urinary pH and to reduce the odor and rash associated with high ammonia levels in the urine. K-Phos Original is also used to increase the antibacterial activity of methenamine mandelate and methenamine hippurate, when used together.

    • What should I know when beginning and continuing on this medication?

      How does this medication work?

      K-Phos Original works by acidifying your urine.

      What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?

      What: By acidifying the urine, K-Phos Original may decrease ammonia levels in the urine, and increase the effects of certain antibiotics. 

      When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's directions. It is important that you take K-Phos Original exactly as your healthcare provider prescribed.

      How do I know it is working?

      You may notice an improvement in your symptoms after you start taking K-Phos Original. Your healthcare provider may also order tests regularly and ask you questions from time to time to check how well this medication is working.

    • What are the possible side effects of this medication?

      The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.

      Side effects may include: diarrhea; nausea; stomach pain; vomiting; bone or joint pain; irregular heartbeat; dizziness; mental confusion; weakness or heaviness of legs; tiredness; muscle cramps; tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain in hands, feet, or lips; shortness of breath or trouble breathing.

    • Who should not take this medication?

      Do not take K-Phos Original if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.

      Do not take K-Phos Original if you have infected phosphate stones or severe kidney impairment.

      Do not take K-Phos Original if you have high blood phosphorus or potassium levels.

    • What should I tell my healthcare provider before I take the first dose of this medication?

      Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with K-Phos Original. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, especially if you have heart problems; severe adrenal insufficiency (a disorder where the body does not make enough of certain hormones), such as Addison's disease (adrenal gland failure); kidney stones or problems; severe burns; myotonia congenital (an inherited muscle disorder); hypoparathyroidism (underactive parathyroid gland); pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas); or if you are dehydrated, or are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

    • What is the usual dosage?

      The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.

      Adults: The recommended dose is 2 tablets four times daily.

    • How should I take this medication?

      Take K-Phos Original exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking K-Phos Original without first talking to your healthcare provider.

      Dissolve the tablets in 6 to 8 ounces of water. Let the tablets soak in water for 2 to 5 minutes and stir. If any tablet particles remain undissolved, crush them and stir vigorously.

      Take K-Phos Original with meals and at bedtime.

    • What should I avoid while taking this medication?

      Do not take antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium.

    • What are the possible food and drug interactions associated with this medication?

      If K-Phos Original is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your healthcare provider before combining K-Phos Original with the following: antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium; aspirin; or certain water pills, such as triamterene or spironolactone.

    • May I receive this medication if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

      The effects of K-Phos Original during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

    • What should I do if I miss a dose of this medication?

      If you miss a dose of K-Phos Original, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

    • How should I store this medication?

      Store at room temperature.
