Zemplar capsules are used to prevent and treat secondary hyperparathyroidism (increased parathyroid hormone levels) in people with Stage 3 or Stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) and in people with Stage 5 CKD on dialysis.
How does this medication work?
Zemplar capsules are a form of vitamin D that blocks the production of parathyroid hormone.
What are the beneficial effects of this medication and when should I begin to have results?
What: In studies, 91% of people with CKD Stages 3 and 4 and 88% of people with CKD Stage 5 had at least two consecutive 30% or greater reductions of parathyroid hormone levels while taking Zemplar capsules.
When: Everyone responds differently to treatment, so try to be patient and follow your healthcare provider's instructions. It is important that you take Zemplar capsules exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed.
How do I know it is working?
Your healthcare provider may order tests (such as blood levels of parathyroid hormone, calcium, and phosphorus) regularly to check how well this medication is working.
The following is not a full list of side effects. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Only your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this medication.
More common side effects may include: diarrhea, high blood pressure, dizziness, vomiting.
Less common side effects may include:
High calcium levels in the blood, with symptoms such as feeling tired, difficulty thinking clearly, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased thirst, increased urination, or weight loss.
Zemplar capsules may also affect your kidney function.
Do not take Zemplar capsules if you are allergic to them or any of their ingredients.
Do not take Zemplar capsules if you have high levels of calcium or vitamin D in your blood.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Zemplar capsules. Also, talk to your healthcare provider about your complete medical history.
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your healthcare provider uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your healthcare provider may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your healthcare provider's approval.
Adults: Your healthcare provider will prescribe the appropriate dose for you and may adjust your dose as needed, based on the results of your blood tests.
Take Zemplar capsules exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking Zemplar capsules without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Take Zemplar capsules with or without food.
While taking Zemplar capsules, be sure to follow any instructions from your healthcare provider regarding your diet and phosphorous restriction.
Do not miss any scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider.
If Zemplar capsules are taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Zemplar capsules may interact with numerous medications. Therefore, it is very important that you tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking.
The effects of Zemplar capsules during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Do not breastfeed while you are taking Zemplar capsules. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
If you miss a dose of Zemplar capsules, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Store at room temperature.
In the event of a medical emergency call your doctor or 9-1-1 immediately. In the event of overdose, call your doctor or poison control for further instructions.
